Imetec Bellissima vs GHD: first clarification
Before we delve into the analysis, let us clarify one aspect. Since both brands have a very wide range of models, we have focused our review on a specific model of each one. Thus, we analyse the most sophisticated of each company: Imetec Bellissima Steam Elixir vs GHD Platinum+.
Imetec Bellissima vs GHD: here are the most significant differences
We know that the differences are often the most helpful when choosing between various models. That’s why we start by pointing out the most important ones between the two brands featured in our review:
Design
The first thing that inevitably catches our attention is the design of the iron, and we have to say that they are very different. The Imetec Bellissima has a squarer design, with wider plates and an integrated comb, which is also removable. It is also only available in white.
The GHD straightener has a much more curved design, including the shaft, with a patented design that gives it a unique look. The plates are narrower, and in this case we can find it in three colours: black, white and blue, although the price varies slightly depending on which one you choose.
Heating technology
This is one of the big differences between the two protagonists of our review. The Imetec Bellissima works with Steam Active Care technology, a steam technology that makes the iron release only the amount of steam needed for each stroke. So you can straighten, wave or curl your hair without any problems.
GHD’s, on the other hand, works with Ultra-Zone predictive technology, which is characterised by an extra level of intelligence. The straightener adjusts to a constant even temperature thanks to its ability to predict and anticipate the needs of your hair based on its characteristics. To do this, it monitors the temperature about 250 times per second.
Sensors
In line with the previous point, the GHD model incorporates two sensors that recognise the thickness of your hair, the size of each strand and the speed at which you are styling your hair. In this way, it adapts in real time with each stroke, which results in much less damage to the hair. The Imetec Bellissima, on the other hand, lacks these sensors.
Temperature control
We are used to hair straighteners including a regulator to control the temperature in 3-4 levels, as is the case with the Imetec Bellissima. This straightener can be set at up to 4 temperatures: 170º, 185º, 200º and 230º. Not bad, as many competing models only offer 3 settings.
The GHD Platinum+, on the other hand, follows a different technique, as it does not include a temperature control. Instead, it maintains a constant temperature of 185º, regulating it with each pass depending on the amount of hair you’re styling and the speed at which you run the iron, so that it never exceeds this ideal temperature.
Price
It’s not surprising to find that the GHD straightener is considerably more expensive than the Imetec, mainly due to the level of personalisation and intelligence it achieves. Thus, the price difference can be up to 70%, although it is true that GHD is quite an expensive brand, unlike Imetec.
Imetec Bellissima vs GHD: what they have in common
Below, we explore the commonalities that Imetec Bellissima and GHD share:
Material of the plates
In both cases we find ceramic plates, the most common material for this type of component. The Imetec Bellissima has plates impregnated with Argan oil to give your hair more shine. The GHD plates are designed with a sliding technology that prevents the hair from tangling.
Plate protector
Both are equipped with a heat-resistant protector. In the case of the Imetec, it is also a silicone mat that not only protects the plates, but also cushions shocks thanks to its thickness.
Automatic shut-off
Another common feature is the automatic switch-off system, a safety mechanism in case you forget to turn off the iron. In the case of the Imetec, it will take 60 minutes for it to switch off, while the GHD only lasts 30 minutes.
Quick heat up
Both of the two featured in our review also have a quick heat-up system, so you don’t have to wait too long before styling your hair.
Extension cord
Finally, both the GHD and the Imetec Bellissima have a cord length of between 2.5-2.7 metres, so you’ll have no problem using it in any room, home or hotel you take it to.
Our conclusion: Which is the best hair straightener?
It’s important to note that the two hair straighteners we’ve chosen have different heating technologies, with the GHD being smarter than the Imetec. Therefore, the crux of the matter, in this case, is for you to decide whether you’d prefer to opt for a more advanced model, even if it’s much more expensive, or whether the Imetec one will suffice.
To be fair, the Imetec Bellissima is very good value for money, as there aren’t many hair straighteners that work with steam and 4 temperatures for less than 150 euros. The downside is that it’s a bit big, which can be a problem if you’re used to travelling a lot. However, it’s a far cry from the personalised experience that GHD offers.
As well as having a sleeker design, the GHD has two sensors that monitor, in real time, the temperature to adjust it for each strand. It is also designed not to exceed 185°C, a temperature that is considered ideal for maximum efficiency without damaging the hair.
And another advantage over its rival is the GHD guarantee, which is one of the most reputable hair straightener brands today. Of course, the price is much higher, up to 70% without offers.
So you need to decide what budget you are willing to spend and whether or not it is worth it to go for smarter technology. Whatever you decide, both have good reviews, so we’d venture to say that the result will be satisfactory.
