JBL Boombox 3 Vs Boombox 2: Comparison and reviews
Throughout this article, we are going to compare how each model performs in the different aspects that influence the purchase decision. However, you should bear in mind that everyone has their own priorities depending on their needs, so it is important that you know how to identify yours.
Also, it is important to say that JBL Boombox 3 will soon be able to purchase in Amazon, as it has been released few weeks ago.
1) Visual differences
The first thing we see is the aesthetics of a product, and this is what strikes us first. JBL has not changed the visual line in the new model. It maintains its traditional cylindrical shape, horizontal position and a large handle on the top.
In addition, the two rubber caps on the sides and the buttons on the top are also retained. What has changed is the size, as the JBL Boombox 3 weighs about 1 kilo more than the Boombox 2. In addition, the company has given a twist to the logo, and instead of showing it in a small size, it has decided to enlarge it and place it as the main element of the design.
2) Battery capacity
Another aspect to consider is the battery performance, which determines the battery life and how long you can use the speaker. Both speakers have the same battery capacity, which can run for about 24 hours in normal playback mode.
However, if you decide to connect your mobile phone to charge it at the same time, the time is reduced. This is possible thanks to the PowerBank function. Thanks to it, you can insert the charger into the USB port while the speaker is running. If the battery runs out, it will take 6.5 hours to charge in both cases.
3) Speakers and sound
It is interesting and fair to say that the JBL Boombox 2 surprised us, at the time, by its sound quality, especially in the bass. A very good quality thanks to the two woofers and tweeters with 40W output power each.
In this aspect, the JBL Boombox 3 has decided to implement some improvements, and allows you to choose between two different sound systems:
AC Mode: 2 x 40W mid-range tweeters, 1 x 80W subwoofer and 2 x 10W tweeters.
Battery mode: 1 x 60W subwoofer, 2 x 30W mid-range woofers, and 2 x 8W tweeters.
Is there a real difference in sound level? It is more noticeable when playing outdoors, but indoors, the sound is very similar to that of the Boombox 2. In addition, there are no major improvements in bass reproduction either.
4) Dust and water resistance
If you’re going to use your speaker outdoors, it’s important to be sure of its resistance to external agents such as water and dust.
In case you didn’t know, electronic devices use the IP rating to measure how resistant they are to external agents such as water and dust. This rating consists of two digits. The first digit, which can be up to a maximum of 6, refers to protection against dust. On the other hand, the second, which can be up to 8, measures the level of water resistance.
The JBL Boombox 2 has an IPX7 rating, which means it has good water resistance, but not dust resistance. The JBL Boombox 3 is IP67 certified, which shows good performance against both water and dust.
5) Party Boost synchronisation mode
You already know that one of JBL’s proprietary technologies is the Party Boost mode, which consists of amplifying the sound by interconnecting several compatible speakers. In this sense, both models maintain this technology, so you won’t find any difference.
6) Bluetooth version
As far as Bluetooth connectivity is concerned, both have this option, but the newer model supports up to version 5.3, while the Boombox 2 stays at 5.1. But, to tell the truth, we don’t think this difference is fundamental.
7) Selling price
Finally, we look at the price. It is important to note that the JBL Boombox 2 has been on the market longer, while the JBL Boombox 3 has only recently been launched. This is already a price difference. But there are also offers to take into account.
However, if we look at the original price of each, without offers, there is something clear. The JBL Boombox 3 is slightly more expensive than its predecessor. It is true that it has more protection against dust and that it modifies a few things, but the price difference is quite significant considering that, from a technical point of view, the innovations are not so important.

Which JBL Boombox wireless speaker is the most suitable?
The main conclusion we draw is that the choice of the most suitable JBL speaker depends on your situation and your intended use.
If you already have the JBL Boombox 2 and are hesitating to upgrade to the new model, our advice is not to do so. You won’t get much better sound quality than the Boombox 2. Also, the price difference is substantial enough to discard the previous model.
On the other hand, if you’re thinking of buying a wireless speaker but don’t know which one to choose between the two, there are a few things to consider. For example, if you are going to use the speaker mostly outdoors, in places like the beach or the swimming pool, our advice is to opt for the JBL Boombox 3, which has a higher level of protection against both dust and water.
On the other hand, if you’re more of an indoor user, both have excellent sound quality and performance. In this case, we find the JBL Boombox 2 to be better value for money, but either is a good choice.
The economic aspect can be decisive if you find yourself in this situation of doubt, as well as the design or other subjective issues. Think about what you are going to use the JBL speaker for, but you should know that, in either case, the result will be very satisfactory.
