The smartwatch community continues to attract followers and enthusiasts, as well as myself, who can’t resist the temptation to evaluate my progress after every training session. To achieve this, I need to have a device that allows me to monitor my activity and performance, storing the information in real time. That’s why I’m always interested in keeping up to date with the latest developments in the smartwatch market, which have become an essential part of my daily life.
Today I present to you the latest from Huawei, something I’ve been eagerly awaiting and which has finally arrived. And, to verify if the Asian brand has implemented significant improvements, let’s compare it with the previous model. Huawei Watch 4 vs 3: Differences to take into account
First of all, I’ll tell you what are the differential elements that we have identified. But first of all, you should know that there are two versions of the Huawei Watch 4, the standard and the Pro. For this comparison I have focused on the Pro version, which is the most complete.
Screen
One of the first differences that jumps out at you is the size of the screen. The Huawei Watch 3 has a 1.43-inch colour AMOLED display with a resolution of 466 x 466 pixels. The Huawei Watch 4, on the other hand, keeps the same resolution, only the screen is AMOLED LTPO and is 1.5 inches, which is slightly larger.
Integrated sensors
The set of sensors that each smartwatch has is one of the things that allows us to guess what level of accuracy they will have when it comes to physical measurement and monitoring. In this case, the difference is that the Huawei Watch 4 has two more sensors than the 3 has, the electrocardiogram sensor and the depth sensor.
Battery life
Continuing to talk about the differences, we now look at the battery life of both smartwatches. The Huawei Watch 4 Pro can last up to 4.5 days in standard use, compared to the usual 3 days battery life of the Huawei Watch 3. If we look at the battery life in ultra-long runtime mode, that of the model 4 extends to 12 days, and that of the model 3 to 14 days.
Compatibility with other devices
If we look at the operating system they tolerate when it comes to compatibility with other devices, there is a slight difference that reflects the time that has passed between the two. While both are compatible with devices that are Android 6.0 or higher, the iOS version changes. The Huawei Watch 4 tolerates iOS 13.0 or later devices, while the model 3 falls back to version 9.0.
Huawei Watch 4 vs 3: Similarities between the smartwatches
As you know, the immediately successive models bear many similarities to the previous ones, and here we pick out the ones we’ve found between the two smartwatches:
Design and colours
The design is what strikes us most at first glance, so it’s always the first thing we look at. The Huawei Watch 4 standard version has a black fluoroelastomer strap, while the Pro version has a titanium strap that gives it a more classic, less sporty look. The Huawei Watch 3 is available in black (silicone strap), brown (leather strap) or aluminium (titanium strap).
However, the design follows a fairly consistent line in both cases, with a slim bezel, a single side button and a diameter of approximately 47 mm. In fact, both models are designed for wrists with a diameter of 140 to 210 mm.
Degree of waterproofing
Another feature that both Huawei smartwatches share is their waterproof rating. Both have a waterproof rating of 5 ATM, which is equivalent to approximately 50 metres of water. That is, provided it is not used in deep water, but rather in swimming pools.
Sports and health performance
The ability to monitor sports performance is another thing that both smartwatches share. In fact, on both you can choose one of the 100 training modes available, including outdoor exercise. They also integrate the SpO2 sensor, which measures blood oxygen saturation, to check if the level of oxygen in the blood is adequate.
They also feature TruSeen heart rate monitoring technology, whose algorithms allow for more accurate heart rate measurement. And if your heart rate is altered in any way, the smartwatch itself will notify you.
In addition to the more advanced features, both smartwatches have basic monitoring functions, such as distance travelled, calories burned and heart rate. Both can also monitor sleep and analyse sleep quality over several cycles.
Smart features
Smartwatches are so called for a reason, because they can do more than just tell the time. In both cases they are practically the same: making and receiving phone calls, answering messages and Whatsapps, listening to music or downloading apps. In addition, in both cases the smartwatch acts as a GPS in case you get lost, something very useful if you practice sports such as mountain biking.
Synchronisation with an app
To keep track of your training progress, there is no better option than to do it through an app on your own phone. And in this respect, both the Huawei Watch 4 and 3 can be synchronised with the Huawei health app. Here you’ll not only see the data from each workout, but you’ll also receive notifications and alerts to improve your fitness.
Huawei Watch 4 vs 3: The best Huawei smartwatch is…
Finally, all that’s left for me to do is to put the pros and cons of each on a scale to tell you what my final opinion is. Of course, as I always say, everyone’s decision may vary depending on their priorities. What is certain is that, in this case, the price difference seems to us to be higher than it should be considering the practical functionalities.
It is true that the Huawei Watch 4 is a new smartwatch, and that always raises the price, which will tend to go down. However, it is also true that the difference in functionality is less than we first imagined when we saw the price variation. The Huawei Watch 4 is a very advanced and comprehensive smartwatch, but we feel that the Huawei Watch 3 is better value for money.
In terms of design, there are no major variations or breaks that justify this difference, but Huawei maintains a continuist line. Therefore, the Huawei Watch 3 seems to us to be a more economical and affordable option, while recognising that the Huawei Watch 4 has very interesting features, such as the two additional sensors or the longer battery life.
So think about which qualities are most important to you and, based on these, choose the smartwatch that comes closest – both have the same quality guarantee!
