A few weeks ago, we had the opportunity to witness the exciting launch of the HONOR 90, the brand new smartphone from the renowned Chinese company. After a period of use and extensive testing, we now want to share with you the main differences we have discovered when comparing it with its predecessor, the HONOR 70. The aim of this comparison is to assess whether it is really worth upgrading to the new model, taking into account the variations in price, features and overall performance.
It is relevant to note that both models come in several versions, including the standard version, the Pro version and the Lite version, the latter being more compact. However, to ensure a fair comparison, we will focus exclusively on the 5G versions of each smartphone: HONOR 90 vs 70. Want to know more details about this exciting review? HONOR 90 vs 70: Differentiating factors
First of all, I’ll tell you about the most relevant differences I found between the two smartphones:
Screen technologies
If we look at the screen, which is the element that stands out the most in any smartphone, we see a curious thing. Although the screen size is practically the same (the HONOR 90’s is 6.7 inches, and the HONOR 70’s is 6.67 inches), the resolution differs.
The HONOR 90 has a 2664 × 1200 pixel display, compared to the HONOR 70’s 2400 x 1080 pixel display. In addition, the HONOR 90’s display has AMOLED technology, while the HONOR 70’s is content to be OLED. So, in this respect, we see a slight improvement in the HONOR 90.
Main camera resolution
In addition to the display, the cameras are another key element of a smartphone. And in this case, it is also another aspect where the HONOR 90 improves on the HONOR 70. The older model has three rear cameras: a 54 MP IMX800 main lens, a 50 MP ultra wide-angle and macro lens and a 2 MP depth lens. It also has a 32 MP front camera.
The HONOR 90 also has three rear cameras, but with different resolutions. In this case, we see a 200 MP ultra-sharp camera as the main camera, a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle and macro camera and a 2 MP depth of field camera. In the case of the front camera, it is 50 MP.
Updated processor and operating system
Now that you know what the main aesthetic differences are, let’s talk about what is, for us, the most important difference internally. It is the processor that each model has, which is an updated version in the case of the HONOR 90. In fact, this smartphone integrates the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor, while the HONOR 70 has the Snapdragon 778G+. Both are 8-core, but the processor in the HONOR 90 offers a slightly faster performance.
This results, among other things, in slightly different memory and internal storage options. The HONOR 90 is available in variants with 12 or 16 GB of RAM, while the HONOR 70 makes do with 8 and 12 GB. On the other hand, this smartphone has the Android 13 operating system, but the HONOR 70 stays on Android 12.
Available colours
Aesthetically, it is clear that we are looking at two smartphones in the same range. In fact, there are hardly any differences in size, although the HONOR 90 is slightly heavier than the HONOR 70.
What does differ is the variety of colours in which each smartphone is available. The HONOR 70 is available in black, emerald green and silver grey, while the HONOR 90 is available in the same three colours, plus a bright blue.
HONOR 90 vs 70: Where it’s unchanged
Now, I’ll explain where they’ve stayed the same:
Maximum battery capacity
To be perfectly fair, the HONOR 90’s battery has slightly more capacity than the HONOR 70’s, at 5000 mAh vs. 4800 mAh. However, the difference, on a practical level, is not noticeable. In fact, both feature a 66 watt fast charging system, which, for all practical purposes, means they can last just as long in operation. This, as you know, will depend on the applications you have open, but the possibility is the same in both cases.
NFC technology integration
NFC (Near Field Communication) technology is the technology that enables contactless payments between two different devices. In this case, both smartphones integrate it, although its operation depends on the region.
Compatibility with the same version of Bluetooth
One of the qualities shared by both smartphones is compatibility with Bluetooth version 5.2, so there are no major differences in terms of the ability to synchronise with other devices.
Sensors included in each smartphone
Smartphones usually include different sensors to provide more intelligence in their use. In this case, they are the same in both smartphones. Both the HONOR 90 and 70 have an accelerometer, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, gyroscope and digital compass. They also feature a fingerprint reader and a sensor that can recognise the features of your face using artificial intelligence to unlock the screen.
HONOR 90 vs 70: What is our final conclusion?
Finally, having compared and tested the performance of both smartphones, it’s time to decide which one I’m going to choose in terms of value for money. The truth is that the HONOR 90 improves practically all the important features compared to the HONOR 70, despite the fact that there is a year difference between the two. Above all, we highlight the updated processor and operating system, as well as the difference in cameras.
The HONOR 90’s main camera has four times the resolution of the HONOR 70’s main camera, making images much sharper. We also noticed a big improvement in the selfie camera, from 32 MP to 50 MP. As for the screen, the resolution is also higher in the case of the HONOR 90.
So, if you already have the HONOR 70, you might want to wait a bit, as the refresh rate of new models is very fast. But if you don’t have either, the HONOR 90 is a more complete, advanced smartphone with better technological features. That said, the last word is up to you.
