De’Longhi Magnifica S vs Philips 2200: pros and cons
As we have already mentioned, we are going to briefly explain the most relevant advantages and disadvantages of each model. Then, we will analyse their performance in each purchase criteria:
What we like about De’Longhi
These are the qualities we like about the De’Longhi model:
- Thermoblock technology
- Good pressure and power
- Multiple grind settings
- It has a milk frothing wand
- Variety of sizes
What we don’t like
The control panel is not tactile, but with buttons, which detracts from the technological aspect that we like so much. On the other hand, it is quite heavy, almost 9 kilos.

Philips highlights
Here are the features that convince us most about the Philips model:
- Foamer included
- 12 grind settings
- Touch control panel
- Allows you to remember the size of coffee you like
- Aqua Clean system
What we would change
Mainly the price of the Philips coffee machine. As we have said, it is not that it is a bad price, but if there are no offers, the economic difference is higher than the difference in performance.

De’Longhi Magnifica S vs Philips 2200: Two top superautomatic coffee machines
We will now compare the performance of each coffee machine on the different criteria that may influence your decision, to make it easier for you to choose. Let’s get started!
1) Aesthetics and design
At a first glance, we can see how each coffee machine has its own distinctive visual line:
De’Longhi Magnifica S is a model that features a silver-coloured control panel, in contrast to the black of the coffee maker, and on which you can operate different buttons to adjust the main parameters of the appliance. It is also slightly heavier than the Philips coffee machine.
The Philips 2200, on the other hand, is all black, with no differentiated part on the control knob. In addition, the display is touch-sensitive. In other words, there are no buttons, but the settings are made by touch.
2) Technical data
The technical information is easy to compare in order to see which of the two performs better.
Pressure and power
One of the features they share is that both coffee machines have a pump with a maximum pressure of 15 bar, as is usual for this type of coffee machine.
And if we look at the power, they don’t actually have the same power, but the difference is so small that you hardly notice it at all. The De’Longhi coffee machine has a power of 1450 watts, compared to 1500 watts for the Philips 2200.
Grinding degrees
Not everyone likes the same type of coffee grind, and not all coffees require the same fineness. It is therefore advisable to choose coffee machines with different grindings.
In this comparison, it is worth noting that the difference is quite small. However, we give a slight advantage to De’Longhi, which grinds coffee at 13 levels, compared to 12 for Philips.
For coffee lovers, even the smallest millimetre matters. Of course, both machines do accept ground coffee, if you already have it.
3) Water: a key ingredient
Let’s talk now about all the features that have to do with water, as it is the key to excellent coffee:
Heating technology
Heating water is not as simple as it may seem. In fact, the temperature of the water is one of the key factors influencing the result of the coffee. If it is too low, the coffee does not come out well, and if it is too high, it burns. And, although both coffee machines have the option of adjusting it, they do so in different ways.
Firstly, the De’Longhi model heats using the Thermoblock system, which, depending on the type of coffee you have ordered, heats only the amount of water needed to make it. The Philips 2200, on the other hand, usually maintains the water temperature between 90 and 98ºC, with the flow rate regulating according to the type of coffee you have ordered.
Tank capacity
While there are differences in the coffee tank, the same is not true for the water tank. In both cases it is 1.8 litres. Therefore, the amount of coffees that can be made with this capacity will be very similar, although it will depend on how long you like them. But, in any case, it would be the same with both coffee machines.
4) Coffee, the main protagonist
As is to be expected, there are a number of features that can tip the balance to one side or the other:
Double output and quantity of coffee
Traditionally, coffee is drunk either with coffee grounds or with milk. That is, with more coffee or more milk. It is therefore not uncommon to find coffee machines, such as the two we are analysing, in which it is possible to choose the amount of coffee we want in the cup.
In both the De’Longhi and the Philips, we can choose between two different sizes of coffee: espresso (or short) and lungo (or long). In addition, both coffee machines have two different coffee spouts, so you can prepare two coffees simultaneously.

Grinder
The coffee grinder is essential to achieve a good texture when grinding coffee, and it is also another of the differential elements found in these two superautomatic coffee machines. The De’Longhi Magnifica S has a stainless steel grinder, while the grinder of the Philips 2200 is ceramic. Although they are different, both are equally valid.
Tank volume for whole bean coffee
One of the differences we found is the size of the tanks where the coffee beans are placed. The De’Longhi model has a 250 gram compartment, a very common capacity in this type of coffee machine. The Philips 2200, however, has a slightly larger capacity of 275 grams.
Milk froth
What’s a good cappuccino without its creamy milk froth? Although it is an additional accessory, more and more coffee machines are integrating a metal milk frothing wand as a standard feature, to create that fantastic creamy milk froth in every coffee. In this case, they both do.
5) Other aspects
In particular, we finish by talking about the cleaning system and the price.
Ease of cleaning
Once you have used the coffee machine, it is convenient to clean it after each use. In this way, you prevent coffee residue from remaining in the appliance and soiling the next coffees you make.
Our two protagonists have a simple cleaning system, as in both cases, both the removable tray and the container can be put in the dishwasher. In addition, in both cases you can use a special descaling product every so often, although you will have to buy it separately.
Price
Last but not least, we look at the price of each coffee machine. Although they are very similar, it is true that, without an economic discount, the Philips coffee machine is more expensive, at around 400 euros, although its features are very similar to those of its rival. We therefore award the victory to De’Longhi.
What types of coffee machines are there?
At this point, you are probably wondering what the differences are between superautomatic coffee machines and the rest. Let us briefly define them:
- Manual: as their name suggests, these are coffee machines that do not have any kind of automatic mechanism. For example, Italian coffee machines.
- Semi-automatic: in this type of machine, some automatisms are combined with other manual controls, such as the amount of coffee to be served.
- Automatic: the main difference with the previous ones is that, in these, the coffee extraction is also automatically controlled.
- Superautomatic: this type of coffee machine, as well as carrying out the whole process, also grinds the coffee on the spot.
Which are the coffee machines that Amazon users buy the most?
We don’t want to finish without showing you, as we usually do, the ranking of the best-selling superautomatic coffee machines on Amazon:

De’Longhi Magnifica S vs Philips 2200: our conclusion
We finish the comparison and we have to choose which of the two we think is the better superautomatic coffee machine. It is fair to say that both the De’Longhi and Philips models are two superautomatic coffee machines of great quality, technological innovation and good value for money.
However, we have to choose one, and that is the De’Longhi Magnifica S. It is true that it does not look as technological as its rival, but it has a more intelligent water heating system, offers a higher level of coffee grinding and, in all other important features, it is on a par with the Philips.
In favour of the latter model, it is worth noting that the coffee department is slightly larger, although the difference is not substantial. In addition, although the price is very similar, it is slightly cheaper, which makes the quality-price ratio a little better.
You now know the pros and cons of each coffee machine, and it is up to you to make the final choice. Whichever you choose, you’ll get it right.
