Nespresso Vertuo Next vs Plus: points in common
We have already told you that the two protagonists of the comparison belong to the same line of coffee machines, VertuoLine. It is therefore not surprising that they share the following features:
1) Coffee types: 5 cup sizes
Among the different varieties of Vertuo capsules you can use, there are 3 capsule sizes available: large, medium and small, depending on whether you want a longer coffee or an espresso.
On the other hand, both the Vertuo Next and Vertuo Plus have the capacity to make drinks for up to 5 cup sizes: thermos (415 ml), standard (230 ml), long (150 ml), double espresso (80 ml) and espresso (40 ml).
It is important to remember that you can only use Nespresso Vertuo capsules or capsules that are compatible with Nespresso Vertuo, but not all capsules from the Nespresso Original range.
2) Centrifusion technology: a balance of parameters
The most ‘techie’ aspect of these coffee machines is the Centrifusion technology, one of the main similarities between the two protagonists of our review. The Centrifusion system enables the machine to read the barcode embedded in each pod, which tells it which parameters are most suitable for that coffee.
In other words, the Centrifusion technology makes the capsules rotate up to 7,000 times per minute to mix the coffee with the right hot water according to the type of coffee you want.
In addition, you should know that both the Vertuo Next and the Plus have a single-button design, and this technological system is responsible for balancing the parameters of each capsule according to its identifier code.
3) Warm-up time: half a minute
Both coffee machines take about 30 seconds to reach the optimal heating temperature needed to prepare the best coffees. In both cases, the light will flash until the temperature is reached, at which point it will remain steady, and you will know that you can press the button.
4) Cable extension: 75 centimetres
You will have no problem placing the coffee machines in almost any corner of the kitchen, always close to a socket. In both cases you will find a 75 centimetre long cable, so there is no difference in this respect.
5) Used capsule container: same capacity
Another similarity is that the two models in our review have a removable tank for storing used capsules, and both can hold up to 10 capsules.
6) Energy saving: automatic switch-off
Finally, it is worth noting that both coffee machines have an automatic shut-off option to save energy. The difference is that the Vertuo Next switches off after 2 minutes of inactivity, while the Vertuo Plus waits up to 9 minutes.
Nespresso Vertuo Next vs Plus: these are their differences
Now that you know how the two Nespresso coffee machines are similar, it’s time to check what their most significant differences are:
1) Models and versions: the Vertuo Next offers more options
Unlike the Nespresso Vertuo Plus, which is only available in white, the Nespresso Vertuo Next can be purchased with the additional top part in grey, red, glossy black and matt.
However, the price varies depending on the colour you choose, as well as stock availability.
2) Aesthetics: vintage meets modern
One of the first differences that stand out is the design, as the two coffee machines are very different from each other.
The Nespresso Vertuo Next has a slightly narrower body than its rival, and has an additional rounded top part that gives it a more modern look.
The Nespresso Vertuo Plus, on the other hand, is more symmetrical, consisting of a single piece which, although slightly shorter than the Next model, is wider.
3) Connectivity: WiFi and Bluetooth
Apart from the aesthetic issues, which are clearly noticeable, connectivity is the main difference between the two coffee machines. In fact, the Nespresso Vertuo Next is the first Nespresso coffee machine to integrate WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity.
This connectivity allows you to instantly receive all software updates or information regarding your capsule stock directly via a mobile app.
4) Water tank: minimal difference
If we’re being fair, this is one of those differences that is very difficult to notice. Both coffee machines are equipped with a water tank, but not of the same size. The Nespresso Vertuo Next’s tank can hold up to 1.1 litres of water, as opposed to the 1.2 litres contained in the Vertuo Plus’s tank.
5) Tray size: victory for the Vertuo Plus
Looking at the removable drip tray on both machines, the Vertuo Plus model has a larger drip tray than the Next, which means it can hold a wider range of cup sizes.
On the other hand, the tray surface of the Next is smaller. What they do have in common is that the tray is at 4 heights in both models.
6) Price
You may wonder if there is a difference in price, and the answer is yes. As we have already mentioned, the different versions of the Nespresso Vertuo Next differ in price. However, they are all cheaper than the Nespresso Vertuo Plus.
It should be noted that this difference may be accentuated depending on seasonal special offers, as well as the possibility of buying just the machine or also the single-dose capsules.

Tips for evaluating the purchase of a capsule coffee machine
As you know, there are different types of coffee machines. From the more traditional ones, such as the Italian ones, to the more sophisticated ones, such as the blender or blender coffee machines. However, if you are thinking of buying a coffee machine that is perfect for everyday use, makes good coffee and is easy and comfortable to use, you will probably opt for a capsule coffee machine. Before weighing up different models, there are a few things to consider:
- Compatible capsules: some models of single-serve coffee machines are compatible with a wider range of capsules, while others are limited to their own. Make sure that the capsules you buy can be used, otherwise your purchase will be wasted.
- Automatic shut-off: Another interesting feature is the ability of many models to shut off automatically after several minutes of inactivity. This simple action achieves significant energy savings, so it is highly recommended.
- Water tank: as you may have seen, capsule coffee machines are equipped with a water tank, which usually has a capacity of 1-1.2 litres. However, some models can even hold up to 1.8 litres.
- Cup size: Ideally, choose a coffee machine that can serve different types of coffee depending on the quantity: espresso, double espresso, lungo, etc. Generally, the capsules are differentiated not only by the taste or the intensity of the coffee, but also by the amount of coffee they contain.
Nespresso Vertuo Next vs Plus: which one should we choose?
The decision as to which Nespresso machine to choose is, like the taste of coffee, a very personal one. However, between the two protagonists of our review, our advice is to opt for the Nespresso Vertuo Next. Firstly, because it is the only one that offers connectivity, and the fact that you can use the mobile app is always attractive and enhances the user experience.
It is also a cheaper coffee machine, even though it has this connectivity advantage over the Plus version, and it is available in more colours. And personally, we find the design of the Vertuo Next much more convincing than the vintage look of the Vertuo Plus.
In terms of coffee, we didn’t notice any major differences in quality, and both can brew up to 5 different types of coffee depending on the quantity you want. However, you will need to make sure you buy capsules that are compatible with the VertuoLine range. Finally, both machines integrate Centrifusion technology, so there are no notable differences here either.
As you can see, the decision comes down more to aesthetics and usability via smartphone. In terms of quality, either is an excellent choice.
