Samsung Galaxy S23 vs S22: Most important differences

We start by talking about the most relevant differences between the two smartphones, so you can check which one is better suited to your needs:

Battery: capacity and life

Battery life is another of the most important aspects for users, and it is another of the differences between the Samsung Galaxy we are analysing. The S23 has a 3900 mAh battery, slightly more than the S22’s 3700 mAh. In practice, this means that the battery life may be slightly longer, although this depends on the applications being used simultaneously, usage time, etc.

Which processor do they have?

Undoubtedly one of the most significant changes in Samsung’s change of strategy in this regard is the processor built into both models. The Samsung Galaxy S22 has the Exynos 2200 processor, but in the S23, Samsung has opted to branch out to chips other than its own.

As such, the Samsung Galaxy S23 has the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. It is also 8-core, but its processing power is faster, which translates into better performance, especially in video playback.

A small mention should also be made of the operating system, which in both cases is Android 13. However, the Samsung Galaxy S22 has Android 13 thanks to updates, but on the Samsung Galaxy S23 it is already built in as standard. This leads us to believe that the S23 will last longer than the S22, although this is difficult to predict.

Available colours

We start by looking at the design, and one of the features that changes between the two Samsung models is the colour you can buy it in. The Samsung Galaxy S23 is available in lavender, cream white, black and grey-green. The Samsung Galaxy S22 is available in purple, white, green, pink and black.

Maximum brightness

One of the things that has caught our attention is that, although the screen is identical in size and resolution, the maximum brightness is different. The Samsung Galaxy S23 has a brightness of 1200 nits, with a peak of 1750, while the Samsung Galaxy S22 stays at 1000 nits with a peak of 1300 nits.

Selfie camera resolution

In reality, the differences in terms of cameras are minimal, but they are worth noting. The most relevant has to do with the front camera, the selfie camera, which is improved on the Samsung Galaxy S23 to 12 MP, compared to 10 MP on the S22. In addition, the S23 gets better night shots, which is also noticeable compared to its smaller brother.

Here’s what they have in common:

Screen size

When it comes to screen size, there is no difference between the two models, with both featuring 6.1-inch Gorilla Glass Victus. In both models we see an AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels.

Rear cameras

Just as the selfie camera changes between the two models, Samsung has not made any improvements to the rear cameras. That is, it keeps the 12 MP ultra wide-angle, the 50 MP wide-angle and the 10 MP telephoto camera.

Normal, plus and ultra version

As Samsung usually does in most of its smartphones, the S23 also maintains its two usual versions, the standard and the plus, just like the S22. Between them there are differences such as screen size and battery life.

In addition, both the Samsung Galaxy S23 and the S22 have a third version: the Ultra model. This does have some more differences in terms of internal capacity and memory, screen resolution and cameras. However, it is the more expensive model.

Endurance level

If you take your smartphone to the beach or the pool, you’ll be interested to know that both the Samsung Galaxy S23 and S22 are IP68 resistant. In other words, they are highly resistant to both splashes of water and specks of dust that may remain on the phone.

Internal storage capacity

Another similarity between the two Samsung Galaxy is the storage capacity. In both models we can choose a maximum capacity of 128 GB or 256 GB, although it is fair to say that the Samsung Galaxy S23 is also available in a version with up to 512 GB. The internal memory, meanwhile, is 8 GB in both cases.

Fast charging

Although the battery capacity is slightly higher on the S23, both smartphones have the same 25W fast charge, so you won’t notice any reduction in charging time.

Samsung Galaxy S23 vs S22: Which smartphone should we choose?

Now that we know what the similarities and differences between the two smartphones are, it’s time to choose which one to go for. As you can see, the Samsung Galaxy S23 introduces some improvements compared to the S22, but follows a very similar line. The most important change is perhaps the switch to a non-Samsung processor, although we’ll have to wait and see if it remains the same in future releases.

As far as functionalities are concerned, there are no major changes, although there are some small improvements. Mostly in the resolution and quality of images on the selfie camera, a small improvement in battery life and a little more brightness range. But overall, the performance of both smartphones is very similar.

As far as price is concerned, it is clear that, being a new release, the Samsung Galaxy S23 has a higher price tag. However, we are inclined to think that, in a few months’ time, they will be priced very similarly.

Perhaps the most relevant question is whether to opt for the standard model or some of the Plus or Ultra versions. In reality, the most significant differences are limited to the Ultra version, which is the most advanced and also the most expensive.

Therefore, our conclusion is that the Samsung Galaxy S23 is an option that we recommend if you don’t already own the Samsung Galaxy S22. If you already own this model, you might want to upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra version, rather than the standard one. In any case, the last word is up to you.
