Samsung Crystal TVs and QLED TVs: let’s see the differences

We’re just talking about Samsung here because these two technologies are an exclusive of this brand. If you want other brands or other technologies, this article might not be for you.

QLED, which stands for Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes, came out recently, in 2019. The quantum dots are an upgrade from LCD LED screens and they help create an amazingly bright viewing experience, from any angle.

Crystal UHD, on the other hand, is a range of screens that can be described as QLED without the quantum part, but according to Samsung, the image quality is even better in some aspects.

How about the processor on each TV set?

Crystal UHD TVs have a Crystal 4K processor that helps optimise the colors, to achieve a close to true color experience. On the other hand, Samsung QLED TVs have either the Quantum Processor 4K or the Quantum Processor 8K, both more powerful than the Crystal 4K, and are able to quickly adjust brightness, contrast and sound in a blink of an eye.

Image resolution

When we talk about QLED TVs, we’re talking about amazing colours (100%, due to the organic activation on individual pixels) and the possibility of watching content in 8K. Also, since pixels are activated independently, this means it’s much easier to control the light, thus fine tuning saturation and brightness (that can go up to 4000 nits) to a whole new level.

You can also find some QLED models with something called Direct Full Array HDR1500, which is basically a back panel lighting, for increased brightness and a better balance between darker and lighter tones.

As for the Crystal UHD TVs from Samsung, they use the Ultra Hi-Definition technology, for 4K viewing, which is also amazing. The resolution will change depending on the size of the screen and the number of pixels it has.

Both models have an HDR system (High Dynamic Range) to help balance tones, but usually, QLED systems can have the HDR 10+ or the Q HDR, while Crystal UHD count on the HDR 10+ version only.

Are they any good for gaming?

These TVs are amazing for video game lovers, especially the Samsung QLED models, because they include the Game Enhancer+ technology, which helps to avoid lagging, and the FreeSync technology, for a more fluid experience. With Crystal UHD models you won’t have any problems playing video games, but they usually have less evolved versions of Game Enhancer. But, again, both are great options to chill with your favorite videogame.

How about audio?

In this particular aspect, QLED TVs is the winner. With the combination of speakers and Q Series sound bar, they can create an astonishing auditory experience, thanks to the Q Symphony technology. On top of that, the Active Voice Amplifier will automatically adjust the volume when there’s some background noise, which is pretty awesome.

Differences in price

We’ve seen that, so far, Samsung QLED TVs have better features. This also means that their price is higher than Crystal UHD TVs. So, if budget is an issue, maybe the latter are your best option.

Do they have things in common?

Nowadays, the differences are in the details. Modern TV models are slim and have big screens. QLED and Crystal UHD models can use the One Remote Control to link several devices with your TV set. There are also a lot of models that can be controlled via Alexa or Google Home. And many use the Multi View technology, to easily play the content from your smartphone.

Both contain the Universal Guide to create lists of favorite channels and to organise those channels and they come with a direct access to Disney+ (and are compatible with all the other streaming platforms, of course). There’s algo Ambient Mode, which is kind of a screen saver with any images that you choose.

The operating system is the same for both QLED and Crystal UHD, it was developed by Samsung and it’s called Tizen. They come with HDMI 2.0 or 2.0, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, for simple connectivity.

The answer to the question: “Which one’s the best: Crystal UHD or QLED?”

Now’s the time to reach a conclusión. We already know that Samsung TVs are a staple of quality screens and technology in general. We also know that the range of TVs available can fit any pocket and any need, going from basic TV sets to hi-tech models.

QLED TVs are superior in most aspects to Crystal UHD models, but they are also more expensive, which means that maybe Crystal UHD have a greater price-quality relationship. Even though the technology in QLED TVs is better, which translates into better image quality and better sound, you’ll have to be prepared to spend more money.

Our recommendation is: if you don’t mind spending more money and what you really want is top quality, then a QLED TV from Samsung is the right choice for you. If you’re OK with letting go of maximum quality in exchange for more money in your pocket, then you’ll be happy with a Crystal UHD Samsung TV.
