If you’re looking for a brand new TV, you’ve probably come across some options from Samsung and LG – two of the best brands out there – but you’re finding it hard to decide.

Don’t worry, we’ll compare both brands and we’ll look at two of their best models, to give you a better idea of what your choices are.

What sets a Samsung Smart TV apart from an LG Smart TV? What do they have in common?

Both from South Korea, a place known for the production of Smart TVs, Samsung has more experience in the market, having been created in 1938, while LG was founded 20 years later, in 1958. They offer not only TVs but also smartphones and other electronic devices, as you probably know.

The main differences between their TVs is the technology chosen for the screen – QLED for Samsung and OLED for LG -, and the resolution (FULL HD, UHD, 8K, etc.), that changes between each model.

There’s also a significant difference when it comes to the remote control. It may seem unimportant, but the options from these brands on their new TVs offer great control and connectivity for a superior experience.

1. Smoother designs

Nowadays, design is so important that it became one of the key factores when choosing a TV (or anything else). The problem is that there aren’t many options when it comes to designing a TV, so these brands try to make their models as thin as possible and with bigger and bigger screens, sometimes removing the frame to increase the image size.

Some can be hanged on the wall, others have legs to stand on, which is something that you should also think about before buying. Think about how you’ll organise the cables and how you’ll connect your Smart TV to other devices, like gaming consoles or others. Regarding this topic, Samsung has created the One Connect system to unite all cables into one.

2. Resolution is key

When it comes to resolution, you’ll find very different options: FHD, UHD 4K, UHD 8K are some of the options and more are still to come. But while this is important, it’s not the only factor that weighs on the image quality, so be sure to look for specific information about HDR (High Dynamic Range), level of contrast and colors.

Also, there are specific technologies implemented by each brand that can help you decide. In our opinion, Samsung is the more capable brand when it comes to image quality, especially on the low range and middle range models, due to the Quantum Dot (QLED), Cristal Display, Ultra Dimming and PurColor. These combined technologies help improve brightness, the color range and the contrast, leading to a sharper image.

3. OLED Vs QLED: the battle of LED technologies

This is one of the great differences between these two brands, because Samsung uses its own recent technology, called QLED (it means Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode and it’s basically a variation of the LCD LED technology), which makes brightness and contrast even more powerful. LG, on the other hand, uses OLED (like most brands out there), which is a superior technology in terms of image quality. OLED has the ability to light up and shut down individual pixels to reach pure black. It also helps to save money on the energy bill.

The downside might be that OLED TVs are usually a lot more expensive. If you want more information about the differences between these two system, check this great article.

4. How about the sound?

You will get an amazing sound experience with any of these two brands, mostly because of two features: the Dolby Atmos speakers included in most new models and the ability to adapt the volumen and the sound projection according to the noise in the room.

5. Processor and Operating System on Smart TVs

You can connect your Smart TV to other devices and apps, much like a computer, and for that you need an operating system and a processor, of course.

Samsung’s last processor is the Quantum Processor 8K AI and its operating system is called Tizen. This allows users to install their favourite apps and sync the TV with other devices, with Smart View. LG uses the Alpha 9 processor and the webOS operating system, which does basically the same as the operating system from Samsung but in a slightly different way.

Some of the newest models from both brands can be managed by voice commands, much like a voice assistant. If you want our opinion, Tizen is the best operating system between the two.

6. How connected are these TVs?

The latest improvements in connectivity had two main benefits: the improvement of the image quality, especially the HDMI 2.1; and to connect with other devices, like Alexa, Google Home or other screens, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

7. What else can they do?

There’s one special feature that we haven’t talked about, and that’s Ambient mode on Samsung and Gallery mode on LG. This basically turns your TV into a giant digital picture frame. You can choose a set of photos to be displayed and they will be shown when the TV is not active.

8. Should we talk about price?

The differences in price are related to the different models and not to the brand itself, so you’ll find options for all pockets on both sides. Unless when you look at the high range models, with OLED and QLED technology – the ones from LG with OLED are more expensive.

Samsung Q90T Vs LG OLED65CX9LA

Let’s do a face-off between these two models to have a sense of what they can offer.

Samsung Q90T – Connected and colourful

This a 65” TV with QLED that presents a wide range of colors and a QLED 4K Real resolution, with capacity for high contrast, making it a great system for any home. Its frame is very thin to increase the visible area of the screen. Even more important than the resolution, its HRD 10+ will give you amazing and realistic details, which linked with the 4K artificial intelligence, that adapts sound and image to provide the best possible outcome, creates a state-of-the-art TV.

And if that’s not enough, it also uses its Quantum Lite processor to calibrate brightness and the Active Voice Amplifier (AVA) that calibrates volume to adjust the reproduction to the room sound. Like most modern Samsung TVs, it has the One Remote Control, making it possible to synchronize the TV with other apps and Multi View, an easy way to share your mobile phone screen on your big screen.

This is also a 65” screen with OLED technology and 4K UHD resolution, with the best feature being the self-illuminated pixels that provide amazing colors and true black, because they can be turned off instead of just blocking the light.

It also makes use of the LG ThinQ AI, coupled with the third generation α9 smart processor and the webOS 5.0 operating system. This TV is compatible with home assistants, like Google Home and Alexa, to give it another layer of control. The sound is responsibility of the Dolby ATMOS speakers that can emulate the 360º feeling of being in a movie theater.

Who wins this battle, Samsung or LG?

In this battle between two of the greatest TV manufacturers, it’s really hard to choose a winner. Both brands have created great products and offer amazing technology, so the decision has to be on the product level.

And for that, we should mainly look at the high range products from each brand, where the differences are more noticeable: Samsung uses QLED and LG uses OLED; each brand uses its own operating system, each with their own weaknesses and strengths; the remotes have different capabilities as well.

Have a look at the information above, decide what you want and need, and then find out which models fit that description, without worrying too much about the brand.
